Eritrea Institute of Technology is a deemed technology University in Eritrea, North East Africa serving the educational need of native students by offering them varied options in varied fields of Arts , Sciences and Engineering. It houses a huge residential student campus of over 8000 students, who are later selectively branched out to other institutes offering other specialized streams of study.
The English Language Teaching is based on Student Centered Interactive Pedagogy which is offered for the first year students. The English curriculum for the final year students is based on ESP (English for Special Purpose). Along with the regular teaching responsibilities, I was also responsible for the curriculum development for Business and Arts Group and ESP curriculum for the Engineering Group.
We had the opportunity to alter my research project PSMT (Personalized System of Instruction and Micro Teaching) which enabled us to close the gap during the teaching learning process-as the classroom environ had students who came direct from the National Service field (after a study gap of 08 years) and also students directly from the secondary schools. The emergent situation needed a teaching pedagogy flexible enough to minimize the expanding learning curve. Hence a need based curriculum was developed with PSMT.
During my stint at EIT, I wrote research papers on “Achieving Global Competitive Advantage: The Language as a Source” and “Ethical Concerns and Global Competitive Advantage: Mapping the Geography of the Interfaces”. These papers were presented in absentia at International Conference on ‘Creating Global Competitive Advantage’ at Udaipur, India. Aug. 2004.
I wondered about basic similarities between the great Indian culture and the cultural fabric of native Eritrean. As being one of the youngest developing nations emerging from the after effects of colonization and the freedom struggle, the native voices and philosophical leanings have been engraved in some of my poetries. An Anthology of poems written on the Eritrean Soil awaits publication. Some of these poems have also been published in the Eritrean Profile.
I also had the opportunity to work on the basic guidelines and project framework of starting multidisciplinary institutes and universities for Ministry of Education’s ambitious educational project.
It had been a wonderful experience to teach and learn there. This foreign experience has helped me to transcend and touch cross-cultural barriers by moulding English language to the urgent needs of the learner.
